From Humble Roots to a Gift of Love

The Mountain Top Inn began as the centerpiece of the Long Family’s 19th-century turnip farm. Its transformation into a retreat began in the 1940s when William Barstow purchased the sprawling estate as a grand romantic gift for his wife, Francoise.

A Presidential Landmark & Nordic Pioneer

Under the stewardship of William and Margery Wolfe, the Inn gained national acclaim, famously hosting President Eisenhower and his entourage. In 1964, the Wolfes utilized the rugged terrain to establish a cross-country ski center. Today, it remains the oldest in the country, boasting 60km of world-class trails.

Resilience & Evolution

Following a fire in 1977 that claimed much of the original structure, the Inn was meticulously rebuilt using traditional post-and-beam architecture. In the early 2000s, a dedicated group of investors stepped in to shepherd its evolution from a quiet country inn into Vermont's premier mountain destination.
