It’s a great way to stay in shape during the winter months; not only is it a fantastic aerobic workout that exercises your leg muscles, but it also builds your arm, back and core strength. In addition you’re outdoors in the fresh air; an invigorating change from running indoors on a treadmill.

Regardless of whether you are already in shape from a summer of outdoor activities or perhaps not as fit as you were a few years ago, starting out with cross-country ski lessons will go a long way to help you enjoy the sport for years to come. Take a lesson at a groomed cross-country ski center, like The Mountain Top Inn & Resort; groomed trails allow you to focus on developing skills and proper technique instead of packing a track or plodding through uncharted snow. Lessons help you get your ‘ski legs’ so you are comfortable on the skis. According to the American College of Sports Medicine, Nordic skiing can burn from 400 to upwards of 1,000 calories an hour; so it is definitely a healthy activity.

Why lessons? After all, how difficult can it be?  Lessons can make a world of difference when it comes to feeling good about the sport.  Take a lesson as early in the season as possible, so you can use what you learn. Lessons help tremendously, but there is no substitute for time on skis. Taking a lesson at a ski touring center that offers rental equipment is another advantage for the beginner. The staff will assist you in selecting the right size boot and xc ski before you make the investment.

Cross-country skiing has the added benefit of being an economical way to spend the day. Trail passes are typically in the $20 range for the entire day. This makes it a great family sport. Not only is the price reasonable, you can talk and enjoy one another as you glide through the woods on the groomed trails. At some Centers, special sleds for pulling young children  (Pulk sleds), are available. You can even bring your dog along at some locations; The Mountain Top Inn & Resort has 15 km of pet friendly trails. While you are out on the trails, include a Nordic Quest or some type of easy, fun family competition. The winner gets a cup of hot chocolate when you arrive back at the xc-ski center.

Let this be the year you give cross-country skiing a try. Whether you join us at The Mountain Top Inn & ResortNordic Ski & Snowshoe Center or you find a cross-country center where you live. It’s a fantastic way to spend the winter and you’ll be in-shape for your summer activities when the warm temperatures arrive again.
